Pure gold is too soft to make wearable jewelry, which is why metals are used. Silver and copper are often used so that you can continue to speak of 'precious metals'. At 14 karat gold, out of 1000 parts, 585 parts are pure gold. The other 415 parts therefore consist of the other metals.
